High mountain in the Cordillera Blanca

The Cordillera Blanca is the highest tropical mountain range in the world. The diversity of its landscape, flora and fauna make it one of the most beautiful mountain ranges on the planet. And its 17 peaks over 6,000 metres and numerous peaks between 5,000 and 6,000 metres above sea level make it a paradise for mountaineers the world over.

Traveling at high altitude

Precautions to take before a trip to the Andes.

During a trip to the Andes, whether in Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador or Chile, you will face areas with high altitudes. And even if ALPA-K design its trips taking time to rise in altitude slowly. At some point, it will be necessary to make the big jump. Cities such as Puno and Cuzco are at an altitude of over 3000 metres, and Lake Titicaca and La Paz are at an altitude of 4000 metres.

Precautions: Before travelling to the Andes, it is advisable to consult your doctor to prevent altitude sickness. Especially if you are being treated for heart conditions or blood pressure problems. Your treatment effects may be a little different before and during the trip.

If you are going to be trekking in the mountains for several days, it is recommended that you seek advice from a mountain medicine centre before.

Mountain sickness...

...has nothing to do with your age

...or your physical condition

...just because you didn't get it on your first trip to altitude doesn't mean you won't get it again

...your state of stress and fatigue, added to jet lag, are major factors

Take the time to do things calmly.
